user interface - Too much control is bad. But when? -

I remember reading a law (well, probably not exactly law), but in software design, Without actually giving it the option of a basic and an advanced mode, the control is sometimes backfired and the user does not have to use any of the options in the first place because they are too much, did I read it correctly? If so, can anyone tell me a more formal source?

me The rule is that in many cases, the user really does not care about small details, just give them a sensible choice.
