.net - ASP.NET membership providers in non-web apps? -

Does anyone know if it is using a ASP.NET subscription (and role) provider in a non-web app? Is possible (i.e. a desktop c # in)? Related questions - There is an LDAP subscription provider (it looks like SharePoint has one, but I do not think it is similar to ASP.NET provider). I'm sure the Active Directory is probably close, but I'm not sure whether it will work against Novell or Sun's LDAP servers.
